PTSD
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder that is caused from experiencing a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, assault, child abuse, rape, an accident, a terrorist attack, etc. Exposure to a traumatic event can involve a person or witnessing someone else whose life is in danger. Symptoms of PTSD may not arise until 6 months after the traumatic event.
Symptoms include:
- Extreme feelings of guilt
- Anger
- Sadness
- Flashbacks of the event
- Trouble sleeping
- Bad dreams
- Lack of concentration
- Hopelessness
- Avoidance of places or things reminiscent of the event
- Thoughts of hurting oneself or others
Some people who experience a traumatic event have symptoms as mentioned above, but go away after three months. Those whose symptoms persist are generally diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There are options to treat symptoms, but there is no cure for PTSD. Currently, new medication is in development for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
